BACP

British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) is a membership organisation and a registered charity that sets standards for therapeutic practice and provides information for therapists, clients of therapy, and the general public.

As the largest professional body representing counselling and psychotherapy in the UK, BACP aim to increase public understanding of the benefits of counselling and psychotherapy, raise awareness of what can be expected from the process of therapy and promote education and/or training for counsellors and psychotherapists.

BACP can provide advice on a range of services to help meet the needs of anyone seeking information about counselling and psychotherapy. It is the largest and broadest governing body within the counselling sector.

British Psychological Society (BPS)

The British Psychological Society is the representative body for psychologists and psychology in the UK. You can contact them direct or use their website to find a psychologist in your area.

What they do:

Psychology is the scientific study of human mind and behaviour. Psychologists work in many different areas of society and are concerned with practical problems, such as helping people to overcome depression, stress, trauma or phobias. The Society promotes excellence and ethical practice in the science, education and practical applications of psychology.

Their objectives are to:

  • Be the authoritative and public voice of psychology

NCP

National Council of Psychotherapists (NCP)

The NCP is a national association of therapists, mainly in private practice, to whom the public may confidently refer. Most schools of psychological thought are represented and a wide variety of therapeutic approaches are offered.

The NCP is one of the longest established societies of its type in the United Kingdom, being formed in 1971 following the “Foster Report” on the statutory registration of psychotherapists.

The NCP is a National and International Association of therapists, mainly in private practice, to whom the public may confidently refer. Most schools of psychological thought are represented and a wide variety of therapeutic approaches are offered.

This site provides a large volume of data, including contact details for the majority of our membership. This also now includes International Members and Members of the National Council of Professional Therapists.

All Members are treated equally, regardless of which division of the NCP they are registered with. Therapists in your area can be viewed online at http://thencp.org/

UKCP

United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is the leading professional body for the education, training, accreditation and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Our register of over 7,800 individual therapists is accredited by the government’s Professional Standards Authority.

As part of our commitment to work for public benefit, we strive to improve access to psychological therapies, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against our members.

We hold a national register of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors, listing those practitioner members who meet exacting standards and training requirements. We also hold a specialist register for psychotherapists working with children and young people.

UKCP’s charitable objectives are to promote:

  • the art and science of psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling for the public benefit
  • research in psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling, and to disseminate the results of any such research
  • high standards of education, training and practice in psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling
  • the wider provision of psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling for all sections of the public.
