Every four hours someone is paralysed by a spinal cord injury Approximately 2,500 people sustain a spinal cord injury in the UK each year
Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury
A spinal cord injury can happen to anyone at any time, and no one is prepared for how it will change their life.
Aspire exists because there is currently no cure.
Through its projects and programmes, Aspire offers practical support to the 50,000 people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK:
from newly injured spinal cord injury patients in hospital
and throughout their lives.
Aspire’s services include:
Accessible housing
Independent Living
Assistive technology
Welfare Benefits advice
This support allows people with spinal injury to lead fulfilled and independent lives in their homes, with their families, in their workplace and in leisure time.
Aspire Leisure Centre (in Stanmore) was the first fully integrated Training Centre in Europe for disabled and non-disabled people
Currently, around a third of our members are disabled, which compares with a national average of 2-3% in other sports centres.
We pro-actively encourage disabled people to join and take part in all activities by subsidising their membership and activity costs and offer a fully Inclusive Fitness Initiative approved fitness studio.
Aspire has gained Quest (UK Quality Scheme for Sport and Leisure), ISO14001 (Environmental accreditation), Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) “Excellent”.
