stoke_mandeville_spinal_researchStoke Mandeville Spinal Research is a charity established to promote research into how to improve the medical and life care of the forty thousand people living with spinal injury in the UK.

It works closely with the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville, which has been providing leading acute care and rehabilitation services for almost 70 years.

    • To improve the quality of life of people with spinal cord injury through research
    • To promote excellence and sustainability in applied clinical research into spinal cord injury

The Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust (BHT) has provided the Foundation with use of facilities in a modern building close to the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) at Stoke Mandeville.

The Foundations’s research activites will seek to:

  • Facilitate high quality spinal cord injury research work;
  • Improve the translation of research into treatment and support for people with spinal cord injury; and
  • Promote, directly or indirectly, additional research projects which meet its aims and standards.

In March 2012 the trustees appointed Dr. Joost van Middendorp as its first Research Director, he is both a qualified MD and holds a PhD in spinal research.
