Emotional aspects of your relationship
If you are the partner of a person with a new SCI, you may have been wondering about the possibility and practicalities of having an intimate relationship and wondering whether you are still attracted to this person.
It may be difficult to ask yourself these questions at a time when you want to protect and love your SCI partner, and at first it will not be easy to talk together honestly about sexual issues. It may help you to explore your feelings with a professional counsellor in confidence.
Most SCI Centres and hospitals will be able to offer you this opportunity and will make arrangements for you to speak to someone. There is also list of counselling contacts in the Useful Information section.
Some couples will want to address these matters in the early days after the SCI, whilst others may not feel ready until later on during the rehabilitation process or when their partner is back at home. It doesn’t matter when, providing you are eventually able to have a frank and honest discussion.
Remember sex is fun and you can have fun again rediscovering each other and finding out what works for you.
