The aim of Physiotherapy is to help to achieve the highest level of physical function possible.
You will meet a physiotherapist on the first weekday of your admission.
Your named physiotherapist will coordinate your physiotherapy treatment throughout your rehabilitation
They will also hand on your care to a community paediatric physiotherapist to continue your care once you are discharged home.
Physiotherapy may be offered in the following formats:
ward/gym sessions
sports therapy
weights
wheelchair skills
aquatic therapy
Your physiotherapist will also support you in liaison with other therapeutic departments:
Provision of splints in the orthotics department – this may include an abdominal brace to help keep you symmetrical when seated in your chair This will also help you grow straight), or splints for your feet to help maintain them in a good position.
Seating assessment and management – physiotherapy help to advise and assess you on the best manual wheelchair to suit your needs.
Equipment assessment and recommendation – you will be encouraged to stand to help your body remain flexible and also help you grow. To do this you may need provision of standing equipment
Sports and Fitness Therapy and Aquatic Therapy
Sports and leisure activities will be as important to you after leaving hospital as they were prior to you coming to hospital.
There are lots of opportunities for you to join in with sports activities during your admission – this is a fun way to increase your fitness and strength.
You may learn a new sport that takes you on a journey to become a young Paralympian!
